Top Thai Boxers Journey to World Championships in Quest for Gold

Island Invasion: The national Muay Thai team headed to Langkwai for the WMC IFMA world chamionships. Some members missing.

Over 30 of the top standup fighters in the country have journeyed to the island of Langkawi, Malaysia, in search of gold at the World Muay Thai Council IFMA World Championships.

The national team, lead by head coach and SMAC Gym stalwart Francis 'Danger' Vesetolu, will compete against fighters from 100 countries around the globe during the ten day tournament which begins tomorrow.

New Zealand Muay Thai icon and NZ WMC President Victoria Nansen is confident the team will continue a long tradition of success on the world stage.

"We've been coming to world's for the past decade and we've won medals every year," she said.

The Nansen family themselves are well represented at the tournament.

Veteran Bay Bee Nansen will compete in the 57kg adult female division while reigning King in the Ring Heavyweight Champion Antz Nansen fights in the 91kg+ adult male division.

Ex-pat Tracy Lockwood, a full time professional fighter in Thailand, will also represent New Zealand in the 71kg adult female division.

Nansen believes there are a few countries to watch at the tournament.

"Thailand for the lightweights and the Europeans like Russia and Ukraine are always strong," she said.

Trials for the national team are held in Auckland every year where competitors fight for their place in the squad.

Full updates from the tournament will be posted as recieved. The official team Facebook page can be found here and a full list of the fighters is below, with a few of their fights linked as I find them.

There's also a sweet video of Artur Kyshenko fighting at a previous WMC IFMA World Championships, proving it's a legit tournament with real, world class fighters.
